In a tragic incident, a canter (mini-truck) ran over 10 labourers near Ajnali village on GT Road, killing five of them and leaving other five seriously injured.
The injured are undergoing treatment at the local civil hospital.
The incident took place this morning around 7:30 am when all the 10 labourers, who were employees of a pipe manufacturing unit in town, were returning after completing their night shifts.
They were walking on the side of the road, when a canter went out of control and ran over them. The truck (HR 69A-0543) was moving from Sirhind to Khanna. The driver of the vehicle, Inder, a resident of Sukhiabad in Sonepat, Haryana, was to move towards Ludhiana later in the day. Police officials investigating the case said either the driver felt drowsy while driving or could not see road ahead clearly due to fog.

Soon after the accident, people got together at the site of the accident and an angry mob was about to beat up the driver, when the police arrived. “People had grown angry over the incident. Had the police not reached in time, they would have manhandled the driver,” said SSP Fatehgarh Sahib Kaustubh Sharma.
Labour unions staged a protest dharna on the road and blocked traffic for around two hours. They demanded compensation for the kin of the deceased and monetary aid for treatment of those seriously injured. Cops tried to pacify the agitating labour unions but to no avail.
Finally, SDM Poonamdeep Kaur reached to the spot and assured the agitating labourers of providing every possible help to the victims. She said the injured woud be treated from Red Cross funds.
While four labourers died on the spot, one died on reaching the civil hospital. The deceased have been identified as Manoj Kumar Rai, Vinod Mandal, Santosh Kumar, Mohammad Shakur and Mohammad Naim. The injured labourers currently undergoing treatment at the civil hospital are Raja Mohammad, Nandu, Ajay, Santosh Kumar and Neil Kamal. Police officials said the injured and deceased were from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh and had been working here for the past few years. The police has arrested the accused and impounded his vehicle.
