The state police have made tight security arrangements around jails where Sikh leaders who hosted and attended Sarbat Khalsa are housed, Each Jail Superintendent has at least 150 policemen under his command to ensure foolproof security.
Sikh preacher Baljit Singh Daduwal, who is seen as a security threat, was shifted to Hoshiarpur jail after three jails refused to lodge him on security concerns.
SAD (A) leader Dhian Singh Mand, who was named “acting jathedar” of Akal Takht, was shifted to Nabha jail.
Sources confirm that the superintendents have been asked not to leave their place of posting and ensure that the staff do not leave the jail while on duty”.
The arrested leaders are not being allowed to contact their associates from outside over the phone, they said.
A source inside the jail stated that the arrested leaders are planning another show of strength, much like the recent event, on April 13 next year. “These leaders have also decided to make the April 13 event much bigger than Sarbat Khalsa to highlight the alleged government apathy towards the Sikhs,” he said.
An intelligence report on the matter has been passed on to DGP Suresh Arora and Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal.
Bid to gherao Rakhra’s house foiled
Patiala: The district police on Sunday thwarted the attempt of Sikh outfits to hold a meeting at the dera of Dhadrianwale on the Patiala-Sangrur Road. The activists had planned to march towards the house of Cabinet Minister Surjit Singh Rakhra.
They have now planned to hold a rally on November 16 to protest the arrest of their leaders. “Some Sikh leaders had decided to hold a dharna and block roads leading to Rakhra’s residence. We were not taking any chance and have deputed adequate police force,” said Patiala SSP Gurmeet Chauhan. He denied that anyone from the SAD (A) was taken into preventive custody, but said: “No one will be allowed to disturb law and order.”
