THREE DROWN AFTER SATLUJ WATER ENTERS VILLAGES

Nakodar August 16:
Three persons were reported drowned while more than 25 were rescued after water entered villages following a significant rise in the water level in Satluj river and Chitti Bein.
Those who are reported dead include Lakhbir Singh (14) from Chak Vendla village in Nakodar, Gurdev Singh (22) from Shaikhan Mand in Sultanpur Lodhi and Karamjit (14) from Sakrala village in Hoshiarpur district. A high alert was sounded in over two dozen villages alongside the Chitti Bein and in Mand area along the Satluj river as a flood-like situation is expected any time if more water is released in the Satluj.
At present, 1.25 lakh cusec water is running in the Satluj, which is way above the 70,000 cusec that calls for an alert, said experts. About a dozen villages in Nakodar sub-division have been witnessing heavy waterlogging.
Manjit Singh, who also got washed away in the water, was rescued after a lot of struggle. In another incident, 26 persons got stuck in the water at Mudh village alongside the Chitti Bein and a motorboat was sent to rescue them from the 20-feet-deep water.
Shahkot SDM Jasbir Singh said the situation in 18 villages in the Shahkot sub-division was quite sensitive and a high alert had been sounded there. It is also learnt that bridge number 727 over Satluj river on the border of Jalandhar and Moga districts has become sensitive. Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner K.S. Pannu visited all the sensitive villages in Nakodar and Shahkot sub-divisions today.
People are facing huge losses with water entering their houses. The government school building in Kukkar village was submerged in four to five-feet-deep water. The incessant rain in Doaba region in the past five days has led to a flood-like situation in various villages located on the banks of Beas river and various other seasonal water streams in Hoshiarpur district.
It may be noted that four persons were washed away in Hoshiarpur and Jalandhar districts on August 12 and 13. In many areas, including Phagwara and Kapurthala, rain has broken records of over 20 years. In Kapurthala, 247 mm rain was recorded in one day, breaking a 24-year-old record.
