The Haryana police will soon have protesters by the throat, literally. For, the force has placed an order for 21,000 Oleo resin grenades to be used in place of tear gas shells to disperse unruly crowds.
These grenades, made from a capsicum extract, have been found to be more “efficacious”, with emissions affecting the throat and causing a bout of prolonged cough.
“The emphasis is on using non-lethal means and causing minimal damage. We have been using water cannons and tear gas shells against protesters. While the shells cause irritation in the eye, a wet cloth on the eye helps reduce the impact. The Oleo grenades are certainly more effective,” said a senior officer.
“As the department wants to test these grenades, we have sought that only a part of the consignment be delivered. Based on the results and feedback, we will ask for the remaining order,” official sources said.
