Abu Dhabi: A private school teacher accused of cutting the hair of a 14-year-old boy was terminated by the school earlier this month, officials from the Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec) confirmed to Gulf News Tuesday.

The Adec had earlier met with the school to discuss the school authorities' investigation into the incident, in which a physical education teacher assaulted and cut the hair of one of his pupils.

The teacher, who had been working with the school for 20 years, was first suspended by the school authorities and then terminated on October 4.

"The Adec will not tolerate any mistreatment of students, which includes both physical and verbal abuse. The Adec will also investigate all allegations in a fair and independent manner," said Yousuf Al Sheryani, executive director of private school division at the Abu Dhabi Education Council.

The teacher was reported as having an otherwise clean track record, and Adec officials said the incident was "a lapse in judgment which bore heavy consequences".

The principal of the school also said that the incident was "unfortunate" but that the school had taken the necessary action against the teacher.
