New Delhi: Tamil Nadu chief minister M. Karunanidhi's family is likely to be named in the fresh chargesheet to be filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the 2G spectrum allocation scam.

According to indications, the names of Karunanidhi's lawmaker daughter Kanimozhi and his wife Dayaluammal, who together own a majority stake in the regional Kalaingar TV, will appear along with that of Sharad Kumar, the Kalaingar TV managing director who owns the remaining 20 per cent stake in the company.

CBI earlier questioned the trio for their alleged involvement in the 2G scandal — convinced the majority of the slush money earned through the 2G spectrum allocation scam, estimated by the CBI to the tune of Rs2.14 billion — finally landed in the Kalaingar TV as the family's share.

Former telecom minister A Raja, who is a close associate of Karunanidhi, is already in prison as the main accused in the case along with his personal assistant.

R.K. Chandolia, the then telecom secretary, Siddhartha Behuria and the Swan Telecom promoter Shahid Balwa were arrested in February.

This was followed by the arrest of five top corporate executives from Swan, Unitech Wireless and Reliance Telecom who were taken into custody by the CBI on Wednesday after their bail plea was rejected in court.

The CBI is likely to file the second chargesheet in the case on Monday.

Raja is accused of favouring Swan, Unitech and Reliance by abruptly advancing the deadline for submitting applications which benefited them most.

Congress ally

Karunanidhi's DMK party, which is an ally of the India's ruling Congress party, is hopeful of emerging victorious in the just concluded state legislative assembly elections, results for which are to be announced on May 13.

However, independent analysts say the rival AIADMK of J. Jayalalitha is poised to take power.

The autonomous Election Commission has seized millions of rupees in the run up to the elections in the state, especially from leaders and workers of the DMK, which was to be used to bribe voters. It is widely believed the money power displayed by the DML in elections was largely the money finally landed into its coffers through the 2G scam.
