The Congress has demanded a financial corporation for the general category considering the economic condition of a section of people belonging to that category in various parts of the state.
The demand has come from Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) president Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu. “Considering the very poor economic condition of some of the people belonging to the general category who cannot be extended help under various schemes for the weaker sections, we need to set up a corporation for that category,” said Sukhu.
He said the demand was based on a study and data compiled by the Congress from all over the state on the deteriorating economic condition of the people belonging to the general category. “It is very clear that they cannot be given job reservation but at least the government can set up a Financial Corporation which can extend them soft loans and some other benefit to the economically weaker section among the general category,” he explains.
He says the proposal will be placed before the HPCC body and accordingly a representation will be made before the state government in this regard. He, however, admitted that a large section of the younger generation was against reservation in jobs and as such only financial held must be extended to the weaker section from general category.
Sukhu said there were many across party lines who agreed that steps need to be taken to help Brahmins, Rajputs, Khatris, or any other community which did not form part of the Scheduled caste, Scheduled Tribe or the Other Backward Community (OBC) as some of them were facing economic deprivation.
Himachal has several commissions for the weaker sections like the HP State Commission for Backward Classes and the HP State Commission for Women. The state also has a Himachal Backward Classes Financial and Development Corporation at Kangra, the HP Minorities Financial and Development Corporation here in the state capital and the HP Scheduled Caste and Schedule Tribes Corporation.
The caste-based census in the state is still awaited but the OBCs are mainly concentrated in district Kangra while the ST population is in Kinnaur, Lahaul Spiti and Bharmour and Pangi.
