Punjab: Sukhbir Singh Badal should get himself baptised says Capt. Kanwaljit Singh
PATIALA : Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) general secretary and Punjab's Cooperation Minister Capt. Kanwaljit Singh said on Tuesday that the president of SAD Sukhbir Singh Badal should get himself baptised.
Addressing a news conference here Tuesday Capt. said that we have advised him to get baptized as earliest as possible. He however admitted that the according to the constitution of SAD an amritdhari Sikh could only take over the reins of the party.
It is pertinent to mentioned that Sukhbir Singh Badal is perhaps the first SAD president who is non-baptised. It is mandatory for office-bearers of the Shiromani Akali Dal to be "amritdhari" (baptised). When Sukhbir Singh Badal had become working president of the party last year, the vice president of SAD Ranjit Singh Brahmpura had suggested that Sukhbir should get himself baptized. Interestingly, Brahmpura was the first to propose his name for the party presidentship. Former union minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and Capt Kanwaljit Singh, general secretaries, endorsed the proposal of Brahmpura.
Capt. Kanwaljit Singh however refused to comment on the resignation of Akal Takhat's chief Joginder Singh Vednati as it was forced by SGPC. He said that it was the internal matter of SGPC and they were independent to decide it at their own. The party has not been interfering in the affairs of SGPC as the constitution of both was different.
HE however evaded the direct reply of the new image of SAD as has been projecting as Punjabi party rather than a Sikh party.
Regarding vote against the Sikh Prime Minister he said that it was due to media which has misinterpreted it and said that we have vote against UPA government as the president has ordered UPA government to get confidence among the parliament.
He however very critical about UPA government's pick and choose method to explain nuclear deal. He said that when national security advisor Narayanan has briefed the leaders of Samajvadi party why it was concealed to other political parties.
Regarding poll prospectus in next parliament elections of SAD in Punjab he said that SAD will win all the Lok Sabha seats. He however said that Punjab will have triangular fight among SAD-Congress and third front. He said that efforts will be made to make it direct fight with Congress.
