The High Court has directed the state government to file a fresh status report on the supply of contaminated water to Shimla by tomorrow.
During the course of hearing, officials of the Irrigation and Public Health Department and the Shimla Municipal Corporation apprised the court about the present situation.
The court directed the state authorities to file the report mentioning all facts about the supply of water to the city.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Mansoor Ahmad Mir and Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan passed the orders on a petition taken up suo motu by the court as a public interest litigation petition on a news item regarding contaminated water supply to Shimla.
The article read: “The Ashwani Khud, which caters to the 1/3rd of Shimla town, is highly contaminated. Newspaper reports even suggested that the sewage-mixed water was being supplied to the residents, which had created an epidemic-like situation in the town. It was also reported that jaundice and other water-borne diseases were engulfing the people of the town and the number was rising by the day.”
