The government today said that it would soon notify spectrum sharing and trading guidelines, which may change the landscape of telecom industry and bring about some mergers and acquisitions as well.
Department of Telecommunications (DoT) Secretary Rakesh Garg said here today that the government had finalised the spectrum sharing guidelines and would notify them in a few days.
He said the spectrum trading rules, which were also in the last phase of finalization, would be out by the end of this month. The norms will enable telecom operators to utilise their spectrum efficiently, besides ushering in an era of consolidation.
Addressing the CII Telecom Convergence Summit here, Garg said, “Our government’s objective is to enable mobile operators to utilise or sell the excess available airwaves in a better way and to check the call drop issue. The guidelines have been finalised in such a way as to promote India as one of the most favoured destination to do business in the telecom industry.”
“The spectrum sharing which was hanging for a long time has now been approved and the related guidelines are ready and have been sent to the Telecom minister for his final approval and will be notified by coming Monday,” he said.
“Two years ago, the government had decided that spectrum sharing and trading will be allowed but the norms have not been notified so far. Now, the Cabinet has approved sharing and trading of spectrum,” said Garg.
