Slain Indians body arrives from Oz

New Delhi: As the body of 21-year-old Nitin Garg, an Indian student stabbed to death in Melbourne, was flown here Saturday, the Indian government announced an ex gratia of Rs 2.5 lakh for his family and the other Indian killed in Australia. The body arrived at IGI and was handed over to his relatives to be taken to Jagraon in Ludhiana in Punjab. The cremation will take place on Sunday. An officer of the foreign ministry was present at the airport to receive the body and hand it over his relatives. MELBOURNE: A 21-year-old Indian youth with permanent residency in Australia was on Sunday fatally stabbed in the abdomen by unidentified assailants here while on his way to work, the first death in a slew of vicious attacks on the community members.
Nitin Garg, who migrated from Punjab, was attacked in a park when he was walking towards fast-food joint Hungry Jack's restaurant, where he worked part-time.
He staggered into the restaurant on the corner of Somerville Road and Geelong Road, West Footscray, about 10 pm local time on Saturday night (0330 HRS IST this morning) and pleaded for help before collapsing.

Family terms Oz killing as racial attack
by Manvinder Singh, 3 January 2010

######

JAGRAON (LUDHIANA): Nitin Garg, 22, hailing from Jagraon, who was studying in Australia, had often been repudiating reports regarding racial attacks when his family enquired about media reports in this regard. It is an irony that after his killing, allegedly by some Australians on Saturday, his family is suspecting a racial attack on the deceased

A call at 8 pm on Saturday evening gave Nitin's family an unexpected jolt as one of his friends informed the family that the young man, who was pursuing his accounts degree at Melbourne, was stabbed by some unidentified local youths while they were trying to snatch a mobile from him. Nitin, who had been studying in Australia for the last three years, had gone to Melbourne on December 16 last year. Even on Saturday morning, talking to his uncle Varinder, the deceased had told him that everything was well. A few hours after that, some locals allegedly stabbed the youth while he was making his way through a park.

Varinder said since media reports regarding frequent attacks on Indians had been pouring in, they had been asking him about it all. He said every time, he used to refute these reports, asserting that the situation was, on the whole, fine, though sometimes, problem is caused when Indians have a fight with natives.

Now, family of the deceased suspect that a racist attack has taken their son's life. "There is apparently no other reason for his demise, as he was a very law-abiding and suave boy, who hardly had any enemy," Varinder added.

Demanding a thorough inquiry in the matter, Varinder said they had approached local MP and Congress leader Manish Tiwari so that the matter was taken up with Union government for getting probe done and the deceased's body was brought back. His mother, an elder brother and a younger sister survive the deceased, while his father, who was a wine contractor, had passed away early last year.

Three Indians denied entry into Australian bar
16 January 2010
MELBOURNE/NEW DELHI: Even as India reiterated an earlier advisory cautioning students against going to Australia, the New South Wales police ruled out a race angle in the murder of Indian national Ranjodh Singh last month and arrested three Indians, including a young couple, for the crime

"We had gone to the bar to throw a farewell party for one of our friends, Abhishek Aggarwal, who is about to leave for India" on Wednesday, said Sujan Pathak, a Nepalese citizen who was part of the group.

However, he said the youths, all in their mid-20s, were turned away by the Melbourne Centre Lion Hotel bar without giving any explanation.

The group of friends -- three Indians and three Nepalese -- just wanted to know the reason for this and contacted police who refused to help them on the issue, Pathak said.

All bars here display a notice outside that they can turn away any customer without giving any explanation.

"We tried to get into the bar, There were so many guys in front of us and right behind us as well in the queue. They denied us (entry), said 'you guys can't get in'," Aggarwal told after the late last night incident.

"We were not drunk, we were carrying our age proof, we were properly attired. But still they said 'you guys can't get in'. They didn't give us any reason. We waited there for 10 minutes. All other guys were getting in... but we were not allowed to go inside.

"We called police and asked them for help. We told them this is a case of racism, because I don't see any other reason for not letting us in," he said.

"Police said we'll come there as soon as possible. I got a call after 20 minutes. There was a guy from the police who said 'What's the issue'? Can you please elaborate'? When I explained the situation to him, he said 'sorry sir, this is not a case of racism. There's nothing we can do about it'," Aggarwal said.

He said he was told by the policeman that they should go to another bar if this one was not letting them in. "I told them this is not about this bar or that particular bar. This is about my dignity, my race...It's a case of racism."

Nearly 100 cases of attacks on Indians were reported in Australia in 2009 as against 17 incidents of assaults in 2008.

On Wednesday, an under-construction gurdwara in south-east suburb of Melbourne was damaged in what police said was a "deliberately lit fire", prompting an outraged Sikh community to call it "race-related" and "an attack on Indians."

MELBOURNE: "Why would he burn himself," asked the wife of an Indian man who was allegedly set on fire in Melbourne as she dismissed suggestions that her husband may have set himself ablaze.

Jaspreet Singh, 29, was reportedly tagetted by four men after dropping his wife at their Grice Crescent home at Essendon at about 2 am on Friday.

He ran from the car while peeling off his clothes. He suffered burns to 15% of his body during the incident.

######

Singh's wife Paramjeet Kaur on Monday brushed aside suggestions that her husband had set himself alight.

"Why would he burn himself, why would he do that?" The Age quoted her as saying. "I do not know why they are saying that."

Police want to re-interview Singh, who is in The Alfred hospital, over the alleged attack.

Some of Singh's clothing had since been recovered but other items remained outstanding, a police spokeswoman was quoted as saying.

The police said on Saturday the incident did not appear to be race-related but a police source said that "there are things that don't add up" in the initial reports.

There have been a string of attacks on Indians in Australia, causing an outcry in India. Two of the vicious attacks proved fatal. While Ranjodh Singh's body was found on December 29, another Indian, Nitin Garg, was fatally stabbed in Melbourne on January 2.

3 Indians held in Australia for Ranjodh murder
MELBOURNE/NEW DELHI: Even as India reiterated an earlier advisory cautioning students against going to Australia, the New South Wales police ruled out a race angle in the murder of Indian national Ranjodh Singh last month and arrested three Indians, including a young couple, for the crime.

The couple, identified as 23-year-old Gurpreet Singh and his 20-year-old wife, Harpreet Bhullar, were charged with murdering Ranjodh Singh, 25, a fruit picker, whose body was found half burned beside a road near Griffith city in New South Wales on December 29 last year.

Gurpreet was arrested on Thursday from a Sydney car wash where he worked. The couple faced a local court on Friday and were formally refused bail by magistrate Bernard Kennedy.

A Punjabi interpreter will be arranged for their next court appearance, due on February 3, at the Wagga Wagga local court.

Police arrested another man, aged 25, in Wagga Wagga city on Thursday and charged him with murder. The man, who was not identified, too is due to appear in court on February 3.

New South Wales police assistant commissioner Mark Murdoch said all three accused knew Ranjodh Singh, who was murdered last month in Australia and ruled out race as a motive for the killing. "We will allege that all three people that we’ve now detained over this matter were well acquainted with the victim, Singh, and were involved in the fruit picking industry in the Griffith area," Murdoch said.

Ranjodh was stabbed multiple times and set ablaze while still alive. His body was flown to New Delhi on Thursday. It will be taken to his native place, Nabha in Punjab, for last rites.

Preneet Kaur again advised Indian students against visiting Australia
In New Delhi, minister of state for external affairs Preneet Kaur again advised Indian students against visiting Australia for the moment following the string of attacks on Indian nationals. "We are doing all that we can. An advisory has been issued not to visit Australia," Preneet said.

"We are pressuring the Australian government to find the reasons behind the attacks, why have they happened and how they have happened," she added.

The minister said the Australian government was "now open to investigations taking place because of the meeting between foreign minister S M Krishna and his counterpart in London".
---------

But , this does not hide the fact that some other cases of attacks committed much prior to this have not seen any result! Do we expect to see justice being done in this or other cases? like burning gurdwara in south-east suburb of Melbourne!

Update-----
Indian student charged with sexually assaulting two girls
MELBOURNE: An Indian student was on Wednesday charged in a western Victoria court with sexually assaulting two minor girls.

23-year old Joginder Singh allegedly performed sexual acts with the girls in a car in Horsham last month after buying them alcohol.

He has been charged with sexual penetration and indecent acts with a child under 16, ABC reported, adding Magistrate Richard Pithouse remanded him in custody.

Singh, who is in Australia on a student visa, had applied for bail twice in Magistrates Court, saying he had surrendered his passport and needed to return to Melbourne for study.

Magistrate Pithouse said Singh posed an unacceptable risk of "re-offending" because he had already broken previous bail conditions.

Indian-origin girl crowned Australia's brainiest student
:)

Melbourne, Feb 1 (ANI): A 14-year-old girl of Indian-origin has been crowned as Australia's brainiest student in a battle of neuroscience knowledge in Sydney.

Uma Jha, from Perth's Shenton College, in inner-west Shenton Park, outsmarted more than 4000 competitors from across Australia to bag the title.

The 2010 Australian Brain Bee Challenge is designed to test high school students on a range of topics, including intelligence, memory, emotions, sleep, Alzheimer's disease and stroke.
Uma has to compete against other state winners in the national final of the competition, which included a brain-teasing anatomy exam, doctor-patient diagnosis and a neuroscience quiz.
"The competition was tied right up until the end and it was a really nerve-wracking finish,'' News.com.au quoted Uma as saying after the event.
"I've never won a national science competition before, so it's amazing,'' she added.
However the hard work does not stop here for Uma. She will now travel to California for the International Brain Bee Challenge in August. (ANI)

UK temporarily suspends student visa applications

Az i already said our ppls thats ppl frm punjab especially goes outside compare to any state..they sold their land(b'cause they feel shame to do any farm work here but same thing they will do in foreign land) .....and then they just moved to aus/nz/canada etc... in the name of higher studies.. Everyone knows now wat type of study they want there yaha tah 12 bhi badi mushkil naal kerdeh tah uthe higher study chahidi lmao... well the main reason is for student VISA...
The hoards of immigrants from India have ruined the image of Indians in that country. Most of the 'student' go there to join vocational courses like hair dressing, facials, nurse and such. The purpose is to gain the permanent residency....Just enter that country...try to marry with some one..bass phir permanent visa mijahuu...then job mileh or they leave it then also as by their country ruls they will be get paid some amount of monthly money...damm greedy guys...Well even Aussie also know about this so all these frustation like attacking on them is in rise and ha these attacks are done only or i will say 99.99% on ppl frm punjab only.
Som of their behavior is still as uncouth as any unrefined Indian. Not fit for a free and liberal society. They gawk/ peep desprately to women at petrol pumps and pass lewd remarks at the girls in the malls,....this is one of the reason too for getting banged... frankly speaking because like this ppl frm punjab whole indian community including punjabi ppls is suffering..or may be i will say just they.... az all attack is done on a people frm a particular state only.
So, once the image is ruined, everyone is at risk. Why do the college students and working people get attacked? Because they have new cell phones, laptops and money.......
Racism narrows down the target for the criminals, and maybe provides an extra incentive. Probably one of their(aussie) girl friends was teased by some Indian assistant at a gas station. And you will know wat will happen then after that..az it was in news...

So rulz should be tougher, only the good students and IT workers only allowed to immigrate. This has caused Indians to enjoy the reputation of being intellectual and civilized.

so therefore now UK also taking some action---
UK temporarily suspends student visa applications from north India(frm punjab)

NEW DELHI: Facing an unprecedented increase in the number of student visa-seekers from north India, Britain has temporarily suspended accepting such applications as it suspects that there may be attempts to abuse the system.

The UK Border Agency, which enforces immigration and customs regulations and considers applications for permission to enter or stay in Britain, today announced the suspension in taking visa applications at its centres in New Delhi, Chandigarh and Jalandhar from Monday.

"We took this decision in response to unexpectedly high numbers of student visa applications in these areas at this time of year. The temporary suspension will allow the UK Border Agency to continue to scrutinise applications thoroughly and to manage the visa process efficiently for all our customers in north India," Deputy High Commissioner Nigel Casey said.

These three centres had received nearly 1000 student visa applications from October to December 2007. This number increased to 1,800 in the same period in 2008 while the number climbed to 13,500 in the corresponding period last year.
"Some applicants are trying to abuse the visa procedure to get entry into UK for purpose other than studies. We cannot allow this to happen," UK Border Agency's Regional Director Chris Dix said. :yes

Asked what kind of abuse the authorities have come across, Dix said probably certain education agents in north India were misleading the students by telling them that they can get entry to the UK for other purposes by using the student visa route.

"We want to ensure that student visa system attracts bona fide students," he said.

The suspension may continue till the last week of February, Casey said. During this period, the visa centres will not accept applications from customers. However, visa application centres in west and south India will continue their operations as usual.
During this period, the UK Border Agency will undertake thorough scrutiny of the applications to ensure that the applicants are bona fide students and they have the financial backing to continue their studies in Britain.

The authorities will also ensure that the education providers in the UK are following rules.
The rise in number of applications has affected the customer service also, Casey said.

Asked the reason for such unprecedented increase in visa applications, Casey said education in the UK is more preferred by the Indian students. The decline in number of student visa applications to a few other countries could have contributed to the rise, he said.
