NEW DELHI:

A Singaporean national was arrested from the Indira Gandhi International airport here this morning for allegedly trying to smuggle seven kg of hashish.

Lee Weiqi (28) was apprehended during the security checking at the airport where he arrived to board a 6 am Luftansa flight to Munich, airport and NCB officials said.

Weiqi was under the surveillance of Narcotic Control Bureau (NCB) for the past few days. He was staying in a hotel in Majnu ka Tila.

Seven kg of hashish was recovered from his possession, officials said.

"The contraband was hidden in the false bottom of a trolley bag which was carried by Weiqi. The contraband was destined to Zurich," an official with the NCB said.

With this arrest, he said, NCB has smashed an international gang of drug traffickers who were involved in transportation of hashish from south east Asian countries to Europe by way of couriers and was using IGI as a transit route.

"The gang had its routes across the continent and used to procure the contraband from Nepal before sending the same to various destinations across the globe," the official said.
