Punjabi youths chasing the foreign dream seems to be spreading all over as more heart-rending tales pour in day after day. This time the distress call has come from 12 youths trapped in Algeria.
According to a letter received by Lok Bhalai Party on Tuesday (copy with TOI), 12 youths from Punjab, duped by travel agents on the pretext of sending them to Germany, Spain and other countries, have been trapped in the jungles of Algeria for more than a year now, and are being subjected to atrocities by residents of the area.
Some Sikh youths in the group have also alleged that they were forced to cut their hair and were beaten up by locals when they protested. The youths have also mentioned that they are left with no other option but to go begging.
Narrating a familiar tale, Jagjit Singh, father of Khushwant Singh from Gurdaspur, who is among the trapped youths, said a travel agent had promised them that Khushwant would get a highly paid job in France. ‘‘After spending Rs 9 lakh, Khushwant took a flight to France, but even after 19 months he is yet to reach the country. We have suffered financial loss, and now this news that his hair was forcibly cut has shocked us,’’ said Jagjit
