Traffic snarls were witnessed on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway this morning following showers. Long serpentine queues of vehicles were witnessed. The traffic jam stretched up to Zirakpur, leading to inconvenience to hundreds of commuters. Ambulances were also stuck in the traffic jam.
The morning showers left the highway waterlogged, that led to the traffic snarls.
It took around 45 minutes for commuters to reach Chandigarh from Zirakpur. Commuters moving towards the Hallo Majra light point from Panchkula were left fuming due to the traffic jam.
There was rush on both sides of the road. The situation returned to normal after 11 am.
The presence of the traffic police at the light points proved of little help. Many office-goers got late for their workplaces.
The situation in Zirakpur was even worse due to waterlogged roads.
The brief spell of rain exposed the authorities’ claims regarding proper drainage system in the city.
For Shiv Verma, who is into the real estate business, it took almost an hour to reach his office in Zirakpur from Dera Bassi.
“Every time it rains, water accumulates on roads and the MC blames it on nature’s fury. Instead of finding a permanent solution to this problem, the authorities’ answer is that the water recedes after a few hours,” alleged another commuter.
Parminder Singh, Executive Officer, Zirakpur, admitted that commuters travelling on the highway suffered due to waterlogging.
He said the waterlogging problem persisted due to underlying work of drainage pipes in the city.
