Seven-year-old boy drowns in municipal swimming pool in Mumbai

Mumbai: A seven-year-old boy drowned in a municipal swimming pool at a sports complex in suburban Andheri today, police said.

The boy, identified as Nazir Siddique, died after he drowned while swimming in the pool owned and operated by the BMC at the Andheri Sports Complex, senior inspector G Kailash of the Andheri police station told the Press Trust of India.

The boy's family holds a membership of the complex, the police officer said. The pool in the complex was reopened just two days ago after being shut for eight months for repairs. The pool was opened by mayor Shraddha Jadhav.

The officer said they are probing all aspects, including if there was any instructor when the incident happened this evening.

"If they find any negligence on the part of the complex authorities or instructors, they will take appropriate action and lodge a complaint against them," he said.

The boy's corpse was taken to the Cooper Hospital at Vile Parle for a post-mortem examination.
