Chandigarh February 9:

The Punjab and Haryana High Court upheld the selection of nine Additional District and Sessions Judges in Punjab.

As a petition filed by an advocate, Dharam Chand, came up for hearing this afternoon, the Bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi did not interfere in the matter. The petition now stands dismissed. In his petition against the State of Punjab and other respondents, petitioner Dharam Chand had earlier contended that the ADSJ’s were selected on the basis of discussion by an interview committee on July 3 and July 4, 2008.

Seeking the quashing of the selection, he had added that the committee had not been validly constituted, as it was without the Full Court’s sanction. The petitioner had added that the viva-voce was conducted by the committee of Justice JS Khehar, Justice Mehtab Singh Gill, Justice KS Garewal, Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel and Justice Ashutosh Mohunta, without the participation of the Chief Justice.

Going into the background, the petitioner had added the advertisement inviting applications from bar members for the direct recruitment to the Punjab Superior Judicial Services was issued on February 2, 2008.
