Scared of malaria, Abu Salem wants to be shifted

Mumbai: Days after he was shifted to the Taloja jail after being allegedly assaulted by a rival gangster, extradited don Abu Salem now wants to be moved out of this prison fearing an 'attack' by mosquitoes.

The rising number of malaria cases has created a fear in the mind of Salem, who today filed an application before a special TADA court seeking a transfer from the Taloja jail, which according to him is infected with mosquitoes.

Salem was shifted to the Taloja jail in Navi Mumbai last week after he was allegedly attacked by Mustafa Dossa, a close aide of Dawood Ibrahim, inside the Arthur Road jail, following an argument.

Salem, in his application, has sought to be shifted back to the Arthur Road jail.

"Salem feels the Taloja jail is prone to Malaria and that he too would be affected by the disease. He has also said that he faces a threat to his life at Taloja jail," his lawyer Raja Thakur said.

Special TADA Judge S T Mahajan has issued notice to the superintendent of police of Taloja Jail and directed him to file his reply by August 23.

Salem, who was extradited in 2005 from Portugal, is currently facing trial in nine cases including the 1993 serial bomb blast case.
