Sangakkara named captain of Dream Team

Mumbai: Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara did not get to lift the World Cup trophy but got named as captain of the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup team of the tournament.

The ICC appointed selection panel of experts made up of former cricketers and journalists picked Sangakkara as the wicketkeeper and captain of the team.

Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who had struggled for batting form throughout the tournament but played a gem of an innings in the final to help India become the champions, was not selected in the team.

India and Sri Lankan players clinched seven out of the 11 slots in the team. Players from South Africa, Australia, Pakistan and New Zealand also clinched a place in the eleven. Virender Sehwag too could not find a place in the team.

Batting order

As per batting order, Sachin Tendulkar will open the innings with Tillakaratne Dilshan (Sri Lanka) followed by Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardena of Sri Lanka, AB de Villiers (South Africa) Yuvraj Singh (India), Shane Watson (Australia), Shahid Afridi (Pakistan) Dale Steyn (South Africa) Zaheer Khan (India) and Muttiah Muralitharan (Sri Lanka). The 12th man will be Tim Southee (New Zealand)
