Tank, facing 10 criminal cases for loot, theft and attempt to murder at various police stations, was found murdered on December 12. The alleged killers too have a criminal record. Old rivalry is said to have led to the murder. Gurjant Singh, who was injured in the attack, is facing three criminal cases.
Jatinder Jain, IG, said the police would seek a polygraph test on those arrested through the court to ascertain the murder motive.
“Efforts are on to locate those absconding, including Shiv Lal Doda, and six more. Raids are being carried out in Himachal, Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhi,” the IG said. He said two station house officers had already been suspended for delay in registering an attempt to rape case against the deceased (Tank) despite a complaint in this regard. “The case against Tank was registered only after he was murdered,” the IG said.
He said any policeman found guilty in the case could be dismissed from service.
The IG expressed ignorance over what transpired between the two sides that led to Tank's killing. “We are trying to crack the case and investigations could take some time,” he explained.
He said a sharp-edged weapon, which is used for tenderizing meat, had been recovered and three vehicles impounded. The police had in its possession the CCTV footage of the Doda farm which was expected to yield vital leads in the case. Digital video recorders (DVRs) of the footage had been sent to a forensic lab.
A team comprising the DIG, Ferozepur Zone, Fazilka and Abohar SSPs and the Bathinda SP (H) had been constituted to probe the case.
