Arrested for having links with Thomas, Olga refused to recognise him while being questioned by the Punjab police in presence of her lawyers and said Thomas was not that person whom she had met a couple of years ago.

In the court of junior divisional judicial magistrate Kapil Aggarwal, the Punjab police officials demanded that they be given an hour to question Olga in front of Thomas. PRESS RELEASE
The Embassy of Russia in India will seek early release of Ms Olga Timoshik
who is kept in custody at a police station in Ropar, Punjab. The diplomatic mission
is concerned that no accusation has been brought to the Russian citizen during the
hearing in the local court on July 1. During the court session which lasted from
10 a.m. to 8 p.m. the prosecutor just stated that the document obtained by Ms
O.Timoshik in Bangalore and confirming that she applied for visa extension for
staying in India “raises doubts in its authenticity”. However, this statement has not
been confirmed documentarily till now.
At the same time advocate Mr Birinder Singh hired by the Russian citizen
has laid serious claims towards police authorities of Punjab. As he asserted, during
arrest of Ms O.Timoshik who has been living in Jaipur since the last year, violation
of due litigation took place. Besides, the lawyer traces excessive pressure during
interrogation which, in his opinion, “equated to torture”. Confinement conditions
of the 31-year old asthmatic Russian woman in the remand cell of the police
station also rouse censure.
The arrest of Ms O.Timoshik who has a diploma of higher education in
journalism, was motivated by the fact that the police discovered her link to a
certain Thomas Kuhn, allegedly a German citizen. The foreigner who has been
wandering around India as a pilgrim for a long time without any identity papers
was earlier arrested near one of large Indian hydroelectric sites on suspicion
of "espionage".
The Russian Embassy has sent to Ropar consular officers to clear up the
case and provide Ms O.Timoshik with necessary assistance in her dealing with the
authorities. According to the decision of the law-enforcement officer, the term of
custody has been extended to 10 a.m. of July 3, Saturday. In case the prosecutor
fails to provide evidence of guilt of Ms O.Timoshik in breaking Indian laws by that
time, she may be released on bail or on her recognizance not to leave the country.
At the same time, the wave of speculations in the media following the arrest
of Ms O.Timoshik is quite noticeable. It is shocking that a number of publications
use insulting wordings against the Russian citizen who has not even been proven
guilty. Most likely, it is aimed at playing up a routine case to a certain "espionage
and terrorist conspiracy".
