Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal has said Rs100 crore sanctioned by the Centre to develop Ludhiana as a smart city is not enough. The state government has already sanctioned Rs600 crore for Ludhiana’s development, he said.
Sukhbir, who was in the city today to lay stones of certain projects, claimed by 2020, the residents would witness a sea change in their city.
The Deputy CM also visited the residences of some SAD councillors, besides inaugurating a Community Health Centre and addressing a public rally here.
On the metro rail and bus rapid transport system (BRTS) projects failing to take off, he said these were central sponsored projects in which huge amounts were required. Metro could not come up due to technical hiccups while BRTS required funding of over Rs2,000 crore.
Sukhbir, however, added within six months, all roads in the city would be re-carpeted. Besides, for a smooth traffic in the city, the government will spend Rs1,100 crore on constructing an elevated highway, he said.
On the residents’ long-pending demand for an airport, Sukhbir said there was a technical problem at Sahnewal, but the government might start domestic flights from Halwara.
On MC’s empty coffers, he said Rs70 crore would be provided for the construction of roads by the government. He said big projects needed time to be accomplished. “You give us time and see the change,” he said.
Reaches out to Bains brothers’ loyalists
Sukhbir today visited the Atam Nagar and areas falling under the Ludhiana South constituency, the stronghold of Independent MLAs Simarjit Singh Bains and Balwinder Singh Bains. He met leaders considered close to the Bains brothers and motivated them to gear up for the 2017 Assembly elections.
Reacting to the Deputy CM’s visit, Simarjit said: “I challenge Sukhbir to contest elections from Atam Nagar. If he wins, I will quit politics.”
Cong MLA alleges bias
Congress MLA Surinder Dawar met Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal on Tuesday. He gave a memorandum to him, saying that his area was being ignored. He said: “I had gone to urge Sukhbir to initiate some development projects in my area as well.”
A year later, Sukhbir meets promise of road repair
Ropar: A year after Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal had a bumpy ride while travelling to a dera at Jhandian village, he has approved Rs 60 crore for strengthening the Ropar-Nurpur Bedi road. Local MLA and Education Minister Daljit Singh Cheema said the work would be started within a month. The potholed road is a nightmare for commuters. It takes at least one hour to cover a distance of just 27 km from Ropar to Nurpur Bedi. On September 11 last year, the Deputy CM had gone to lay the stone of a primary health centre at Baba Lal Das Brahmanand Bhooriwale dera at Jhandian village. Finding the condition of road miserable, he had announced that the road would be repaired on a priority. Cheema said the 21-km-stretch from Ropar to Bainsa would be strengthened at a cost of Rs 15 crore. Three causeways would be built on the route, he said. The road near Abiana and Bajroor villages on this route would be widened to 33 ft to avoid traffic congestion at these points, he said. —TNS
‘AAP no threat’
Ludhiana: The Aam Aadmi Party has lost its ground in Punjab since out of its four MPs, two have been suspended and the other two are not on good terms with each other. This was stated by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal while interacting with the media at ITI here on Tuesday. He alleged: “AAP has failed to live up the expectations of people in Delhi. It could not appoint Lokpal within one year, imposed taxes and failed to provide free power supply. It is not an Aam Aadmi Party. It has adopted a VIP culture where Arvind Kejriwal is acting as a dictator.”
‘Cong faction-ridden’
Sukhbir said the Congress was ridden with factionalism and thus had no substance. He said: “In contrast, the Akali-BJP alliance is going strong and the two will again form the government in the state.” Earlier, Sukhbir also held a meeting with Bibi Surjit Kaur Dang, wife of Harbhajan Singh Dang, president District Akali Jathha (Urban-2). He also held meetings with some SAD councillors who were earlier loyal to the Bains group. These included Kamaljeet Singh Karwal, Jagbir Singh Sokhi and Satpal Luhara. Luhara has rejoined the SAD.
