Rs 1 lakh for kin of Armymen killed in '84 riots

FATEHGARH SAHIB: In a move aimed at helping the families of Army personnel killed during 1984 anti-Sikh riots, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbadhank Committee (SGPC) has decided to give them financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh.

The decision comes after efforts by Col PS Phulka (retd), secretary general of ex-servicemen wing of SAD. The SGPC took a final decision on compensation during its executive meeting here. The Sikh body has formed a special committee to check authenticity of claimants and will pay Rs 1 lakh after completing investigations.

"Yes, we decided to extend financial help to all those Army men who were killed during 1984 anti-Sikh riots," confirmed SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar.

Referring to implementation of Union government plans, he said water treatment plants would be set up at Takht Kesgarh Sahib and Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, Talwandi Sabo, as well as SGPC land provided on contract. Committee also approved Rs 3 lakh for setting up digital system in Sikh History Research Board.

For the improvement in the working of SGPC it was also decided to appoint director, media; director, Sikh history and a research board.
