Jalandhar December 6:

Punjab Police has booked Ashwini Julka, a rice mill owner on the charges of theft and cheating for keeping a stock of damaged paddy, which they alleged to be the property of the Punjab State Civil Supplies Corporation Limited, popularly known as PUNSUP.

Senior Punjab Congress leader and former chief parliamentary secretary in the government of late Chief Minister Beant Singh, Gurwinder Singh Atwal accused the police for working under the pressure of SAD chief and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal who registered false cases against congressmen to pressurise them to join SAD.

While briefing mediapersons here yesterday, Mr Atwal claimed that the miller was a senior congress leader and was also a former Sarpanch of the village Bilga. He questioned the state government and the district administration that in what capacity the damaged paddy could be considered as the property of the government agency. The damaged paddy belonged to the miller and he was entitled to use it.

He would raise the matter with the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) and if needed approach the court also to seek justice. He blamed the state government for ruining the paddy crop of the farmers and said that thousand quintals of paddy was still to be lifted lying in the grain markets.
