CHENNAI:

Extreme disciplining of students on campuses has claimed its first victim with a first year engineering college girl hanging herself on hostel premises of a self-financing institution near Chennai after being allegedly rebuked by the college chairman for talking to a boy on Thursday. Ironically, the girl is related to the college chairman S Fomra.

The victim, 18-year-old Anithra of Uttar Pradesh, was pursuing a course in electronics and communication engineering at the SMK Fomra Institute of Technology in Kelambakkam on the outskirts of the city. According to police, the college had recently installed closed-circuit television cameras on the campus.

“On Thursday, the college chairman had viewed the CCTV and spotted girls and boys sitting together in groups and speaking to each other. Anithra was also found sitting besides a boy and chatting with him. Immediately, he had summoned everyone and reprimanded the students for talking to members of the opposite sex. He had separately rebuked Anithra since she was related to him,” a police officer said.

Fearing that Fomra would inform her parents in Uttar Pradesh about the incident, Anithra had locked herself in the hostel room while her roommates were away and ended her life by hanging from the ceiling.

When her body was discovered on Friday morning, a group of enraged students vented their feelings by ransacking the college property and breaking window panes. Principal L Mahesh Kumar, however, said that Fomra had only advised the students not to waste time during examinations and concentrate on their studies. “Since Anithra was his relative, he advised her separately and she returned to her hostel room,” he added. A senior faculty of the college acknowledged that Fomra was keen on “maintaining discipline” on the campus. “Probably Anithra was too sensitive,” he said.

Police said no suicide note was recovered from Anithra’s room. Her body was sent to the Chengalpet government hospital for post mortem. “We have informed her parents about her death and they will be here,” the senior faculty member said.

When contacted Anna University (Chennai) vice-chancellor professor P Mannar Jawahar said: “We will inquire into the incident.”
