The Shiv Sena, which is part of the ruling front in Maharashtra, has come out in support of the Sanatan Sanstha whose activist has been arrested in connection with the murder of senior communist leader and rationalist Govind Pansare.
An editorial in Shiv Sena’s mouthpiece today warned against “attempts to denigrate and defame Hindutva”. “One person has been arrested for the murder of Govind Pansare. But it should not become an excuse to target the Sansthan Sanstha.... Investigations are being carried out as if the Sanatan Sanstha is behind the murder. While the truth behind the murder should be brought out it should not become an excuse to defame Hindutva,” the editorial said.
The newspaper went on to condemn the murder of Pansare, though. “We do not agree with Pansare’s views but we strongly condemn his murder... the murder of any senior citizen is act of cowardice,” Saamna added.
The Shiv Sena mouthpiece criticised the Congress for its call to ban the Sanatan Sanstha. “It has now been proved that the Congress played a big role to suppress information on the death of Subash Chandra Bose. Shouldn’t Congress be banned as well,” Saamna asked.
Meanwhile, the police in Mumbai have confirmed that senior journalist Nikhil Wagle was receiving threats to his life from the Sanatan Sanstha. Wagle, however, told mediapersons that he has rejected the government’s offer of security.
The police here claimed Sameer Gaikwad, arrested in connection with the murder of Pansare, boasted to his associates that Wagle was next on his hit list.
