The Congress rally organised here today will have its effect on the politics of Haryana which accounted for bulk of the good turnout.
With former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who was the co-convenor of the organising committee, emerging as an important figure as regards the rally, the politics is bound to revolve around him.
The BJP and the INLD — the Congress arch-rivals in the state — were watching keenly the progress of the rally; right through the mobilisation campaign till the time Hooda delivered his thanksgiving speech. The event was an encore of the Congress rally of farmers organised in April in protest against NDA government’s move to replace the Land Acquisition Act, 2013, enacted by the previous UPA government. The supporters of Hooda donning pink turbans stormed the venue, as they had done earlier. The stark difference was that Hooda was officially part of the authority regarding the event. Rather, he was the Congress’ Man Friday as the other co-convenor Digvijaya Singh was reportedly out of country.
The reason for the BJP’s and INLD’s wariness was rooted in ground realities of the state. The BJP wants to consolidate the gains in garnering votes of farmers and peasants in the last Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, while the INLD would like to protect its support base in the same constituency.
