With Islamic State threat lurking in India, Home Minister Rajnath Singh today met with Muslim clerics and sought their cooperation to check the growing tendency of country’s youth getting attracted to the ideology of the terror outfit. The clerics on their part condemned the act of violence in the name of religion.
During the hour-long meeting, which was also attended by National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and senior Home Ministry officials, the government informed the clerics about activities of the IS and its efforts to lure Indian youth to its fold.
A Ministry of Home Affairs statement said Singh sought the cooperation of the clerics, who offered all help to the government in this regard. The issues discussed included misuse of social media; sources of impetus that attract persons, especially youth, to IS; the growth of IS influence in India’s neighbourhood; and the best possible law enforcement response.
Among the clerics who attended the meeting were: Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind’s Maulana Arshad Madani, Maulana Abdul Wahid Hussain Chisti of Ajmer Sharif, Asghar Ali Imam Mehdi of Jamiat Ahle Hadees, Tauqeer Raza Khan, Rafiq Warshiq, Shia leader Maulana Syed Kalbe Jawad Qalbe Jawaid, Kamal Farooqi and Mushafa Faruqi.
Singh underscored the need for welfare schemes for the minorities, besides devising social media strategies. He said India’s traditions would overcome nefarious designs of terrorist groups.
