The Railways has revoked its order to suspend the Banihal-Baramulla train services for two days during Eid. The trains will now ply normally on September 26 and 27.
“Locals had appealed for restoration (of train services), especially in view of Eid-ul-Azha and their request was backed by the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir. The Railways has decided not to suspend the train services on the said rail section,” the chief spokesman for the Northern Railway said in a statement.
The spokesman, however, appealed to the people not to indulge in vandalism during the festive days.
“In the light of recent incidences of arson and vandalism of sophisticated Railways installations and obstructions caused by anti-social elements in train services in the Valley, the Northern Railway appeals to the people using the Banihal-Baramulla train service to discourage, prevent and counsel persons indulging in mindless vandalism and obstruction of rail operations as the public is put to inconvenience, causing a chain of detrimental conditions,” the spokesman said.
Last week, the Railways had decided to temporarily suspend the train services between Banihal and Baramulla, apprehending untoward incidents on Eid. However, the decision evoked criticism from commuters.
On Sunday, Chief Secretary BR Sharma had told The Tribune that they would take up the issue with the Railways so that trains run on Eid.
