Punjabi Jagriti Manch honours folk singer Satinder Sartaaj

Punjabi Jagriti Manch on Wednesday honoured Punjabi folk singer Satinder Sartaaj for his contribution in promoting Punjabi language and culture through his renditions and music. The Sufi mystic from Hoshiarpur said that he considered himself responsible for promoting his culture through his lyrics. He added that the West Asia culture was full of values, heritage and tradition. However, in the era of globalisation, it is essential to move towards modernisation but also stay rooted. The singer, who holds three albums to his credit, said the there did exist a market for vulgar and lewd songs, but people also needed to stay away from such such crass music. Until people decide not to watch and listen to such content there will be singers, who will cater to their demands, he added. The singer who took to pen to express his thoughts in 2003 said that it was when he was pursuing his doctorate at Panjab University, Chandigarh, that he started reading the works of Punjabi stalwart writers at the university library. Inspired by them, todayhis writings reflect the rich heritage of the state. Satinder refuted rumours of his entering into acting. He said that he would sing onyl his own compisitions and if a filmmaker signed him on these terms, then he would sing. On the occasion, the singer shred some intterersting anecdotes and songs from his recently released album 'Afsane Sartaj De'. In the CD, he has dedicated a song, 'Kudio Roya Na Karo', on the flight of women. He said that people must learn to support women and respect them to ensure a just and happy society.
