A private school in Mohali has raised the Sikh community's hackles by asking three Class X students to sit in a separate classroom for wearing the turban.
Lawrence Public School defended its decision saying the school rules allowed turban only for Class XI and XII students and patka for the others. The SGPC said the rule was "unacceptable".
Gursewak Singh, Inderjeet Singh and Ravi Inder Singh were first taken to another classroom before the principal told them that they were violating the school’s rules by wearing the turban.
The next day, there were protests outside the school. "We didn't want to hurt the sentiments of anyone," said principal Veena Malhotra. "I am a Sikh too. How can I challenge my own faith?" she asked. The principal, however, tendered an apology to the protesters later.
SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar said the police should register a case against the principal. "We have been encouraging Sikh children to wear the turban. The school's action is illogical," Makkar said.
