Chandigarh April 6:

There is a need for stepping up research-based scientific programmes to control communicable diseases besides, covering every aspect of our health endeavour including nutrition, maternal and child health, environmental sanitation, intensive research and health education.
Appreciating the theme of World Health Day - 2008 "Protect Health From Climate Change", General Rodrigues said that the whole world is seized of this grave problem and this issue is being debated in various national and international fora.
He said that global warming and climatic changes are bound to impact on the health of individuals and society, at large. It has a more direct effect on people living in tropical and sub-tropical areas and the countries, which are already struggling to fight against diseases like malaria, malnutrition, polio, cholera and waterborne and infectious disorders.
A mass awareness and action oriented approach is, therefore, needed at all levels to check the occurrence of ill-affects of weather related calamities on health and to evolve technologically advanced strategies for improving ecological standards and to maintain bio-sphere balance.
