Appalling as it may sound Punjab policemen, who were 'framed' in the act of thrashing a man in Bhogpur police station in Jalandhar district, do not remember when or who they tortured.
What is even more appalling is that senior cops appear to be 'satisfied' with the tenuous explanation of 'memory loss' offered by the accused assistant sub-inspector, a head constable and a home guard jawan. And, after two days, since the MMS surfaced and got published, the identity of the man remains a mystery for the police!
"He is untraceable as the accused ASI and head constable have said that it is a very old case and they don't remember the identity of the victim or the reason and person for whom he was brought to the police station," claimed Jalandhar SSP (rural) Ashish Chaudhary. "We are registering a criminal case against them and legal opinion is being taken from district attorney (legal)," he added.
Sources revealed that police establishment was not much interested in identifying the victim, but more concerned about the identity of the person who filmed it and then leaked it. Well-placed sources revealed that cops were suspecting that somebody within the force filmed it. "The MMS clip suggests that there was nobody else except the cops at that time when he was being thrashed with a wide belt," said a senior police official while speaking to The Times of India.
Whether or not instructions have been issued to ensure that no such thing happens in police stations in future, but a police source disclosed that directives have been issued to junior Adampur SAD MLA Sarabjit Singh Makkar claimed that he would inquire about the incident and the accused cops should be taken to task and identity of the victim should also be revealed.
"Senior cops don't want to be extra tough in this case as other cops may start using this as an excuse to go easy with suspects," said Dalbir Singh, patron of Khalra Mission Organization, a rights group.
