Punjab congress gears up for polls

The Punjab Congress vowed to defeat the communal forces represented by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and its alliance partner, the BJP in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections in the state.

Presiding over the meeting of general house of the party here today, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Mohinder Singh Kaypee called upon the tarty rank and file to unitedly take up the challenge of SAD-BJP communal alliance and ensure the victory of the partys candidates.

The meeting was attended by present and former MLAs, office bearers, former PPC heads and AICC members from the state. The meeting was also addressed by the CLP leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal and the AICC observers, Ranbir Mahendra and Nav Prabhat.

The PPCC chief clarified that all the MLA's and former MLA's of the party will work within the limits of constituencies they represent or represented and not in the new assembly segments as notified after the delimitation. Mr Mahendra and Mr Nav Prabhat also addressed the meeting and said that indiscipline in the party will not be tolerated at any stage.

Ms Bhattal called for gearing up the party machinery and activating all cells of the party, including frontal prganisations like the Youth Congress, the Mahila Congress, the Congress Seva Dal and the Scheduled Caste and the Backward Classes cells. She expressed confidence that the party would win all the 13 seats in Punjab. Former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh however could not attend the meeting as he was pre-occupied with other political activities.

The PPCC announced the formation of a 48-member campaign committee and the also appointed 13 Parliamentary Constituency Coordinators. The PPCC has set up a control room at the Pradesh Congress headquarter here under senior leader Naseeb Singh Gill. Mr Raj Pal Singh, will be the medua incharge of the party.

Mr R R Bhardwaj, Mr Basant Singh and Harpreet Singh Gharuan will be members of the Control Room Committee who will take up complaints of code violation with the Election Commission of India.
