Agitated over a rapidly increasing influence of mafia in the labour community and their misuse of the Bonded Labor Act, the Brick Kiln owners of Punjab have decided to observe a three-day strike to seek support of the Central and State government.
Their Association has urged the High Court to review the Bonded Labor Act. The strike is likely to be a setback to various infrastructure and construction projects in private as well as government sector. The manufacture of bricks have already been put on hold since June this year. With this strike, the Brick Kiln owners' association has prohibited the sale of bricks from retailers now.
The brick kiln owners allege that under the influence of mafia in the labour community, false complaints are being lodged against the brick kiln units despite the continuous vigilance of Labor Commissioner, Warrant Officers (High Court) and local administration. President, Punjab Brick Kilns Owners Association, Kuldeep Singh Makkar, said:
"The government is ignoring the just demands of this industry and that would be a massive setback to owners. This could further make them lose their interest in this trade." The Association has demanded that the government should take appropriate action on such false complaints to avoid heavy losses to industry.
