Protesting teachers held

Chandigarh March 5:

As many as 10 women teachers of Punjab were arrested when they were going towards the residence of Punjab Education Minister in Sector 39 with the intention of self immolation.

Sawrana Devi of Bathinda, Satbir Kaur of Mukatsar and Punam Devi of Mansa were arrested at Hallomajra lightpoint, Sector 31 and seven others were arrested near Sector 39. Rejecting the bail applications of the arrested teachers, they were sent to judicial custody for four days.

SHO of police station, Sector 31, Inspector Jaspal Singh, said that the women protesters were arrested following advance information by the CID wing. Police said that a truck load of Aganwari leaders and supporters had entered the city from Zirakpur. The protesters were arrested under the preventive sections (107/151 of CrPC). SHO of PS-39, Inspector Charanjeet Singh, said that some had entered the city from Mohali. A separate case was also registered against the seven teachers at Sector-39 police station.
