Mumbai: Popat Shinde, the prime suspect in the murder of Additional District Collector Yashwant Sonawane, today died at a state-run hospital in Mumbai.

Sonawane had been set on fire in Manmad, 260km from Mumbai on January 25.

Shinde, the accused murderer, had been brought to Mumbai for treatment of 70 per cent burn injuries which he had sustained while setting fire to Sonawane, who had confronted him about an oil smuggling and adulteration racket.

Shinde and his accomplices had allegedly doused Sonawane with kerosene to set fire to him and Sonawane had reportedly grabbed Shinde during the attack.

"Shinde died this afternoon," said P.P. Lahane, Dean of J.J. Hospital.

"After conducting post mortem, the body will be handed over to police investigating the murder case."

Sonawane was returning from Chandwad when he spotted trucks parked near a roadside eatery, near an oil company depot.

His suspicion was aroused since the place was notorious for oil pilferage and adulteration. He got out of the car and started questioning the men when Shinde and his men attacked him.
