Patiala January 18:

Union Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur has said as many as 75,000 visa applications of the NRIs were pending in various US embassies, on account of outsourcing the work to complete the process of granting visa. Preneet was in Patiala today to attend functions organised by different organisations.

She said, “I have already taken up the matter with all embassies, so that pending visa applications of the NRIs are cleared at the earliest.” Expressing her views regarding the demand of setting up a tribunal to exclusively deal with the problems being faced by the NRIs, Preneet said though setting up of a tribunal in Punjab is a state subject but being a Parliamentarian from Punjab, she supports the demand, as it would help in redressal of problems being faced by the NRIs on priority basis.

Preneet said, “In December a deputation of the NRIs met me and informed that about 75,000 visa applications of the NRIs are currently pending in various US embassies. Subsequently, the MEA made inquiries and it came to light that majority of the embassies have outsourced the work of granting visa. Furthermore, the staff appointed by outsourcing agencies is not competent enough, following which cases of visa clearance of the NRIs are increasing.”
