Prayers held for Ishmeet Singh at Nankana Sahib
LAHORE: Pakistani Sikhs on Friday held a ceremony at Gurdwara Janam Asthan Nankana Sahib in memory of the late celebrity singer Ishmeet Singh, and demanded the Punjab government hold a seminar to compliment their hero.
The Ludhiana-based Indian singer drowned in the swimming pool of a resort in Maldives on Tuesday, July 29. Ishmeet was crowned the Voice of India in November 2007, and was considered the pride of Sikhs all over the world.
Guru Nanak Mission Gee, a Sikh non-government organisation, conducted a special prayer ceremony at Nankana Sahib on Friday, which was attended by hundreds of Sikh youths.
Mimpal Singh, organiser of the ceremony, told Daily Times that Ishmeet was the first Sikh singer to win the Star TV’s reality show, Voice of India. “He won the title on the occasion of Baba Guru Nanak’s urs, held on November 24,” he said, adding that Ishmeet was the hero of all Sikh youths. He said that the Punjab government should send Sikh youths’ delegations to Ludhiana so that they could condole with Ishmeet’s family.
Kalyan Singh, known as the young ambassador of Sikhism, told Daily Times that Ishmeet’s first album was Shabad Kirtan (sacred versus), which was released in April 2008. He said the Punjab government should hold a seminar to pay tribute to Ishmeet. He said that the chief minister had sent his condolence to the late singer’s family. Abdul Manan
