The Fisheries Department at Fatehgarh Sahib, under a pilot project, has undertaken a trial of prawn farming in Fatehgarh Sahib and if proved successful it will be introduced to farmers later on. The department has purchased 5000 prawn seeds at a cost of Rs 610 per thousand from the Centre Institute of Fishery Education (CIFE), Rohtak (Haryana).
We have installed tanks in the department land at Fagganmajra Bagrian village for the trial wherein these prawns are kept. We will watch its growth till September, said Extension Officer Sukhwinder Singh Walia of the Fisheries Department in Fatehgarh Sahib.
Their growth is usually hampered by rise in temperature, as it grows better between 30 to 35 degree temperature. Its mortality rate increases during November when temperature reduces and that is the crucial time to keep constant monitoring. Prawns also show nature of cannibalism when it fails to get adequate feed and eat each other to survive. The department had earlier also experimented prawn farming but that time prawns were released in fishpond and it failed to develop. This time a special tank of 60 feet by 40 feet was constructed in the department nursery for this purpose.
The department officials and farmers said the prices of fish feed had increased manifolds during the past few years which resulted less income. Prawn farming may prove fruitful for farmers of area as the same is sold at a very high price in various hotels of Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Delhi and farmers are making huge profits with its sale in other parts of the state.
Fish feed, including mustard oil cake, d-oiled rice bran was available at a cost of Rs 450 per quintal and it has now increased to Rs 655 per quintal, said Beerinder Singh of Shampur village. Beerinder is selling various varieties of fish for the past 15 years after converting his entire 20 acres land into fishpond. He rued that increase in fish feed has made a dent in the income of fish farmers.
