PPCC SECRETARY HELD FOR CHEATING

Phagwara July 18:
In a major embarrassment to the state Congress leadership, PPCC secretary Drashan Lal, who was recently appointed to the post, has been arrested by police for cheating and forgery, as he had given two different affidavits about his identity and got a passport issued on his assumed identity.
According to police sources, Drashan had submitted an affidavit on June 4, 2005, for getting a passport in which he had introduced himself as Paramjit Kumar, son of Ishar Dass, a resident of Mohalla Dharamkot Phagwara. However, on June 16, 2008, while submitting his nomination papers for contesting as Congress candidate for MC election, he gave an affidavit identifying himself as Drashan Lal, son of Dhoonda Ram.
It is learned that police had got information about the cheating and forgery, after which a case was registered against him under sections 420, 465, 468, 471 of the IPC and Section 12 of the Passport Act and he was arrested. Notably, he was elevated to the post only a few days back and some advertisements complimenting him and thanking the PPCC president had appeared only a day back.
In fact, his elevation has baffled many in the party, as he was a new entrant and was hardly known in the local political circles, but the PPCC leadership gave him a state-level post. He had lost to the BJP candidate in the recently held MC election. Sources said ward number 15, from which he had contested the election, had witnessed heavy expenditure on polls.
