Chandigarh September 17:

Soon the name of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief would be announced. A high-level meeting will be held on Saturday under the leadership of former MP and Pradesh Returning Officer (PRO) Usha Thakkar where as many as 234 PPCC delegates will submit one line resolution for the name of party president.

Besides Thakkar, MP and All India Congress Committee (AICC) Secretary RC Khuntia will take part in the meeting. PPCC general secretary Rajpal Singh said: "The name would be given to them in the meeting which would be held at party office in Sector 15 and the decision would be come very soon." After the north zone mini session of AICC was postponed, the party has glued their strength in the direction of appointment for their State chief.

The party rank and file has been waiting for the appointment of a full-fledged State unit chief for quite some time. The present incumbent-Mohinder Singh Kaypee, also Congress MP from Jalandhar reserved constituency-has been functioning as a stop-gap arrangement for many months.

Meanwhile, former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has already declared that the Congress president Sonia Gandhi will have the final say in the appointing the new party chief for the State. After September 13, the State had to send the recommendations to the high command, who would take the final decision. Amarinder had stated, "The all India State presidents' election process was from September 11 to September 13.

Following which, the names of new State presidents would be decided by the Congress president Sonia Gandhi." Whosoever becomes Punjab unit Congress president will be tasked with uniting various warring factions? It was a major problem the party faced during the last Lok Sabha election, when the party could win only eight out of 13 seats. The party needs a strong leadership in Punjab to galvanise the cadre to stand up against a resurgent SAD.
