Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Saturday pollution warnings were so scary in the city that something drastic was needed, referring to his government’s decision on traffic rationing.
He said the decision to let cars with odd and even number plates run only on alternate days would be tried out for a few days and the details needed to be thrashed out.
“We discussed medium term measures like public transport and road redesign, but these are panic conditions, something urgent had to be done,” he said at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2015.

“We thought a lot about the decision we made yesterday (on Friday) on cars with even and odd number plates plying on alternate days… Media picked only odd-even number plate announcement we made, ignored other announcements.” he said.
Kejriwal also laid out the rationale for his government’s other anti-pollution measures. “Soon, a tender for vacuum cleaning of Public Works Department roads in Delhi will be announced,” he said. “People burning garbage will be fined as part of measures to control pollution,” the Delhi CM added.

The Delhi government said on Friday that starting January 1, the days when a private car would be allowed on the streets would depend on whether its licence plate ended in an even or odd number.
The government also said it would shut down a power plant in the capital that burns coal, increase public transportation and inspect trucks at the border to make sure they comply with emissions regulations.
