Mumbai: Suspected Somali pirates captured in a firefight with Indian Navy and Coast Guard forces will be brought to Mumbai today together with the 24 fishermen they allegedly took hostage.

The 28 suspected pirates will be handed over to the police.

The navy and coast guard were conducting anti-piracy missions when they encountered the pirates aboard the Thai trawler Prantalay-11 west of India's Lakshwadeep Islands.

The Western Naval Command ordered the rescue mission after receiving a distress call that a Greek-flagged merchant ship was under attack by pirates some 100 nautical miles west of Kavaratti Island.
