AMRITSAR: Making his community proud, Mimpal Singh (28) became the first Pakistani Sikh to have cleared the Diploma in Child Health, besides topping the Services Institute of Medical Sciences examination. This distinction has made Mimpal the first Sikh paediatrician in the neighbouring country.

Talking to TOI over the phone from Lahore, a proud Mimpal said he was thrilled to be the first qualified Sikh paediatrician of Pakistan. "Sikhs in Pakistan are making it to the highest posts and there is no dearth of opportunities for the right talent in the country," he said.

Mimpal, a registrar with the prestigious Mayo Hospital, claimed that neither were the minorities discriminated against nor restricted from competing for the higher posts, adding that they were free to join the country's top institutes.
"The government can introduce such a system in medical colleges for the Sikh community," he said. Mimpal is also the president of Guru Nanak Jee Mission, an NGO.

Earlier, Harcharan Singh of Nankana Sahib, Pakistan, became the first Pakistani Sikh in the country's 58-year history to be commissioned in the Pakistan Army as an officer in 2005. Then, Gulab Singh (25), became the first-ever Pakistani Sikh traffic warden at Lahore. Gulab Singh also hails from Nankana Sahib.
