The Panchkula police today busted a gang of robbers with the arrest of three members — Sultan, Pappu and Sunil. The gang was on the prowl for the past seven years and used to target people carrying huge cash by opening fire at them while moving around in Zen, white Swift and white Etios cars.
The three reportedly confessed to their involvement in several robberies since 2008, including the robbery and murder of Anil, a cashier with the Electricity Department, last month and the loot from a petrol pump owner.
Police teams have been sent to arrest seven members of the gang named by them. By evening, the kingpin of the gang, Vinod, was also rounded up.
According to the police, the robbers, hailing from Uttar Pradesh and Jind, Hisar and Sonepat in Haryana, were residing in Rajiv Colony, Indira Colony and Mauli Jagran. After committing the robberies, rather than escaping into neighbouring areas, the gang members would stay in the colony.
Their lavish lifestyle did them in. The police became suspicious when Sultan, who was living in Rajiv Colony, was seen with a new bike worth Rs 1.5 lakh. The police kept a watch on him and got to know that he was involved with a few more persons and they were planning a dacoity in the Industrial Area on mobikes and a white Swift car today.
“A team of the crime branch arrested three of them while six others managed to flee from the spot. Those arrested confessed to their involvement in previous robbery incidents, the recent ones among them being the robbery of Rs 9.8 lakh from the owner of a petrol pump, the robbery of Rs 9.22 lakh from a cashier and his murder, a robbery of Rs 7.48 lakh from employees of Amartex and the robbery of Rs 11 lakh from a liquor vend,” said Commissioner of Police OP Singh.
Sources said the police rounded the kingpin of the gang this evening. “They said they used to commit the crime by moving around in Zen, Etios and white Swift cars since 2008. They admitted that they had robbed the same cashier, Anil, in 2009 also using a Zen,” said a police official.
After committing the robberies, rather than escaping into neighbouring areas, they would change the number plates of the cars and stay in the colony only.
The police have recovered a bike (HR 99 T PB 5278) worth Rs 1.5 lakh, a country-made pistol, a live cartridge and a rod. The robbers will be produced in the court tomorrow.
