Kolkata: CPI (M) wants the Election Commission to take stringent action against Trinamool Congress candidate Subhangshu Roy, who is running for the Bijpur Assembly seat in Nadia district, for allegedly assaulting a team of Election Commission officials.

The Election Commission has filed a first-investigation-report (FIR) at Bijpur police station against Roy and 10 other Trinamool cadres on the charge of assaulting members of a team appointed by the election authority that had visited Bijpur to inspect campaign slogans in public and private buildings.

Speaking to Gulf News, CPI-M central Committee member Salim said: "On one hand Mamata Banerjee is calling this election a celebration of democracy and on the other hand her candidates are beating EC members. This is not only unfortunate, but a sure sign as to how Trinamool leaders will behave if at all they come to power."

Subhangsh Roy is no ordinary candidate, but the son of Union shipping minister and All-India Trinamool Congress general secretary Mukul Roy.

In a telephone interview, Roy told Gulf News: "I have nothing to say in this matter. [The] law will take it own course, and if someone is guilty, he will be punished as per law."

Political observers are quit stunned at this incidence, as Subhangsh is well-educated man who understands the implications of such actions.

According to Shyamal Chakraborty, Rajya Sabha MP, Trinamool has used violence to provoke voters and has been interfering with the work of the commission for some time now.
