Mumbai: A delegation of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena leaders yesterday demanded the dismissal of the state government.The demand was made to the Governor of Maharashtra, K. Sankaranaryanan.
The Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, Eknath Khadse, said: "We demanded the Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) government be dismissed and an inquiry be conducted into the involvement of bureaucrats in the scam."
The bureaucrats had not just been involved in the Adarsh Co-operative Housing Society's 31-storey residential building, which was built on a plot of land belonging to the Indian Army.
The scams had also been related to Lavasa Lake city, Ramoshi Watan land in Pune and many others, they said.
Recalling the 26/11 terror attacks in which bureaucrats escaped from being subjected to any inquiry, Khadse stressed the importance of taking action against them.
The Opposition said it also wanted an inquiry into the role of present and former chief ministers in the scam.
BJP leader Vinod Tawde said: "Even if the land was owned by the revenue department, it should have been handed over to the army when they wanted to use it to build homes for Kargil war widows and war veterans."
He said the governor had indicated he would consider the legal points of writing a report on the dismissal.
With a weak opposition in the state, it may be likely that the only change that might come about in the state is a new chief minister to replace Ashokrao Chavan — though there is a vacuum of senior Congress leaders who could take over the job.
Recommendations
With former chief ministers Vilasrao Deshmukh, Sushilkumar Shinde and Narayan Rane and senior ministers from both the Congress and its coalition partner NCP having made recommendations for people close to them in Adarsh Society, the choice for the next head of the state may not be an easy one.
Meanwhile, Chavan, who has offered to resign and has been roundly blamed for the scam since he gave the go-ahead for Adarsh when he was revenue minister, has also been accused of handing over tribal land in Pune to a builder friend whose son owns a flat in Adarsh.
A Pune builder, Ravi Barhate, has filed a petition in Bombay High Court appealing for a reversal of Chavan's decision taken in 2002. More than 100 acres of tribal land worth millions of rupees were handed over to developers.
