The Punjab Mandi Board today sought tenders for providing winter uniform to its 260 peons and drivers. These are to be submitted by February 16, when winters will be nearly over. A peeved Mandi Board Chairman, Ajmer Singh Lakhowal, has ordered an inquiry into the lapse.
“I have ordered an inquiry. The erring officials will be penalised. The tenders should have been floated by October. Any delay in future will be unacceptable,” he said.
A Mandi Board official said after the tenders are approved, the peons and drivers are given coupons for purchasing the uniform. But owing to the delay this time, the staff had to buy the uniform and shoes on their own.
“Floating tenders at this stage is meaningless. We are told to be in uniform but these are not provided to us in time. The government should instead reimburse the money we have spent on purchasing the uniform,” said an employee.
