NEW DELHI: Even as Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has hinted at scrapping the odd-even vehicle rule if people in Delhi face problems, his radical plan to check the alarming pollution in the national capital got a boost on Sunday with the Chief Justice of India endorsing it.

"Judges have no problem with the odd-even formula of the Delhi government," Chief Justice T S Thakur told ANI.

Kejriwal had on Saturday said the plan to allow odd and even numbered vehicles on alternate days on Delhi roads from January 1 was an "experiment" to deal with the "emergency situation" in the city. He said it could be discontinued if people faced problems.

"What remains to be decided is whether the 'thought through' period should be 20 days or three months. We want to do it in 20 days. We have to talk to many agencies involved. In a day or two, we will come out with ads seeking suggestions from public. We will do as the people say," he said.

For now, the Aam Aadmi Party government is sticking to January 1 as the target date for the rollout though Kejriwal acknowledged a lot of groundwork was needed. The government plans to review the plan after 15 days.

The odd-even formula was among a series of measures announced at a meeting chaired by Kejriwal on Friday after the National Green Tribunal pulled up the Delhi government for failing to curb air pollution.

The Delhi High Court had also said earlier this week that living in the city was like "living in a gas chamber".
