No posters on public walls by Dec 2

NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has re-launched its anti-defacement drive, this time with much more vigour. The civic agency has decided to make it a three-day affair beginning from November 30 and will ensure that there are no posters defacing public properties by December 2.

According to MCD officials, around 500 staffers from across the 12 zones will help remove illegal hoardings, posters, pamphlets etc. pasted on walls and poles in the Capital. MCD will also urge residents to remove unauthorized posters that they spot. Besides this, there is also a provision to fine habitual offenders. Under the newly enacted Anti-Defacement Act in the city, all those caught defacing properties can be fined a sum of Rs 50,000 or can face a jail term of upto one year or both. "We are aiming that by December 2, no unauthorized posters should remain on walls in Delhi,'' said an official.

In August, MCD had launched a similar defacement drive and had then removed around 4,000 unauthorized posters. Col Shivraj from Munirka Vihar said: "All Delhiites should participate in ensuring that Delhi looks more beautiful by removing posters. Security guards in colonies should be asked to keep an eye out for people putting up posters and prevent them from doing so.''
